End of Cam shaft broke, what now?

I'm doing my first timing belt job and was going to do the cam oil seal while I was in there since I have no history on this motor prior to 4 months ago.

After I pulled the cam gear off, I noticed the end of the cam shaft was broken under the dowel pin. I touched it and the piece fell off.

I'm new to getting this far into a motor so what do I do now? Do I need a new cam shaft? Is this an indication that there was a cheap aftermarket cam in there? Can I put the peice back on there and put the cam gear back on and be ok?

What really pisss me off is that the oil seals were recently replaced!

Any help would be great, thanks!

You shoulda never touched it!! Just kidding. But you might need a new cam. Maybe upgrade to a more aggressive one?!

If you don't need it urgently I have an m20b25 cam you can buy and I'll ship it out. I can let it go on the cheap, just a stocker unit.

Might as well get an upgrade.

You don't need to. Nor do you NEED a new cam by the looks of that. But it would be highly recommended to get one.

Pull the head and replace the cam.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

You can also pick up a used head for $150-$200. Installing a cam is not very hard. You just need to take your time and fallow the steps carefully. Option three is JB weld the piece back and and install the cam gear over it. I don't think anything bad would happen as long as the dowel is still there and the cam gear is secured nice and tight and does not move out of place.

                HELLO DOLLY!!!

You, OP, are not alone. See my 2 pg. Thread:

I just used JB Weld to fix the joint. So far its been 2,000 miles and everything's fine.

Although I did notice that your chip is bigger than mine, but that's all it is right? just a chip.
I got all the possible responses: replace the cam, repair it, don't repair it, replace the cam with head on, etc. etc.

I chose to repair it, I really don't see a problem with this since the cam sprocket fits over the end of the cam anyways, the repair alone should be enough to hold it. Whatever you decide I support it, and next time be more gentle when removing that damned thing.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone, I really appreciate it.
I'm going to go the repair route. My crack looks to be even shallower than Paperplane94's so I'm comfortable knowing his has held up and apparently did even before it had any JB on it.
                  Thanks!

                    Cool. Glad I could help.

If my camshaft shatters or I jump time or something I will immediately make a thread titled "Cstone12, go buy a new camshaft!" :D

Just put it back together without the broken piece and forget it, its outside of the seal and that dowel has plenty to bite on . Enjoy the money you saved.
