Quick Question on what I might be missing

Im almost positive I'm in need of a head gasket so the vert has been garaged for a bit before it over heated. Im | | this close to having all the cash I need-I think.

Here's a few things I will be getting done with the "while you are in there" thought in mind.

Pull the head, most likely need a check/decking

The PO replaced ONE rocker arm-good idea to replace them ALL again to make them all on the same time line? After adjustments the valves tick after maybe a couple hundred miles
    ^new eccentrics?

    ALL rubber and gaskets

    T-belt+ Water Pump

I need a muffler, how much should I expect to pay for a decent rebuild, or should I just go back to stock-running no muffler is fun lol

new battery since the po treated this one like shit

should I get valve work done? is it not worth it unless I really spend the cash to support that type of modification?

    injector refresh/replacement?

    plugs?

oil pan gasket...new pump too? what else do I need if I change the pump?

    I know Im missing something

The po really avoided maintenance and only did the required work so I feel it would be appropriate for the vert to be treated right for once. Im only looking into some performance mods if I feel its worth it while I'm there since the head will be off and in good hands.

Everything listed here is what I can think of unless someone else can chime in and remind me of something?

You should have the head pressure tested and resurfaced no matter what.

You do not need to replace all of the rocker arms. If the contact surface is in good condition they're fine to run.

If your valves are adjusting to the proper clearance you do not need new eccentrics. This will not help you in any way.

If my valves go back to loud ticking again after a proper adjustment what would be the cause?

So I've been checking out your heads for a while now....do you think at my mileage of 145k a rebuild would be smart to do since I'm in there? I was wondering if it would be worth it or to go towards a rebuilt head...If I were to buy a rebuild from you, it would be smart to go with a cam obviously in order to take advantage of the port&polish right?

I'm really lost as to what I should do now because I know I will get hit for a rebuild no matter what.

It sounds like you have to catch up on some deferred maintenance so if cash is tight I'd focus on the overdue items rather than upgrades. If you are pulling the head, do it right according to what you are reading here. IMHO it makes no sense to put a cam in a car then have the timing belt go.

If you are like the rest of us, you will have time to do upgrades once your car is "properly sorted" and you have fallen pathetically (ok hopelessly) in love with it. I have 3 e30's so AMHIK :-)

I plan on doing a lot while in there but since the head will be off wouldn't it be better to do some upgrades?

What you do with the head while its off is a practical as well as personal (financial) decision. "Rebuilding" is a good plan, but I wouldn't start spending money on porting or a cam if it means postponing some of the other essential items you mention.

I've found that valves that dont stay adjusted have stripped adjusting nuts (AMHIK). They are $.12@ and not easy to find so next time you order parts, get a few to keep around and if you find one that is stripped be sure to plug the holes in the block and CAREFULLY remove the old threads from the bolt. I literally unscrewed it so as not to break it since its like a fine metal slinky that can easily come apart and would love to carve up your bearings if you let it.
