    90 325is no start

Was running last nite, fan/alt vbelt gave out, new belt on, started just fine gave it some throttle and it stumbled then stalled, now engine cranks but wont fire. I was thinking fuel pump relay, but Im getting 12v power to the pump at the connector, and 12v at the coil.

New in the last 30 days airtex 255lph pump, fuel filter, and known working used fuel pump relay. Checked all the fuses in the panel, on to the cps? or something else?

I pulled one of the radiator hoses to get better access to alt and spilled coolant on the fan/trigger wheel, could that have any ill effect?

The first check should be to determine is spark is present at the coil wire when cranking the engine. No spark there could be a lack of timing data to the DME, a DME power or ground problem, or even a bad DME. If there is spark at the coil wire, check for a broken timing belt next. Then check the rail fuel pressure when cranking and follow that with a check (using a noid light) for firing of the injectors.

If you make it through all of that with no failures, the next check would be a smoke test of the intake.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

thanks, ignition tester shows spark while cranking, will try fuel pressure next, intake boot is new in the last 8k, pulled to inspect, no cracking or tears checked afm flap not sticking

metered the cps just for the heck of it, 485 ohms, betley says 540 +/- 10% its borderline in my opinion, maybe on its way out and not helping matters any

If you have spark, the CPS is working even though it appears to be out of spec. That also means the DME is running. The next check would be for valid fuel rail pressure and injector firing (check with a noid light).

thanks a bunch to jlevie, fuel rail pressure good at 44psi, tested battery voltage again, was 11.9v, put it on the charger for 3 hours, 12.7v picked up a brand new fuel pump relay and she fired right up, i guess 20* and 20w50 oil on a weak battery just wont work.

anyway, thanks for the help, i know you answer every no start thread on here and it really is appreciated.

I am running 5W30 in the cold Wisconsin winter months and 15W40 the rest of the year. 20W50 in cold climate is tough!

so, it happens again, and i know its not the weather (40*F) or weak battery( just charged for 3 hrs again)

it sounds like battery voltage is at least contributing to your problem. If it needs recharging that often maybe its time for a new one or at least swap in a known good one to see what happens.

Are you sure your alternator is in good shape?

im guessing coil is on its way out, primary resistance was way out of spec, gonna pick one up tomorrow, also have a spare battery im gonna trickle charge overnite and swap in tomorrow. either way, it is a good excuse to do some much needed routine maintenance, plugs, wires, cap&rotor, next pay will be timing belt water pump.

the biggest reason for the draw on battery is cranking while i try other relays/fuses, then i slap on the charger and walk away for a few to collect my thoughts and study the bentley
