Rod Bearing repalcement

If the engine has a rod knock or a bearing has spun, at the very least the crank will have to be removed from the engine, checked for wear, and polished. That means removing the engine from the car and tearing it down. As to a DIY, you'll want the Bentley manual for the procedure, torque specs, and journal dimension table. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

What to do is driven by how much wear there is in the engine. It also matters what engine this is. It is very easy to find affordable lower mileage ETA engines. M20B25 engine will cost a bit more. SuperEta engines are more rare than ETA or i/is/ic engines and thus more expensive. An engine for an ix will be harder to find and more expensive.
While one can make a guess on the condition of the engine, just based on mileage, until the engine has been torn down and inspected an estimate of the repair/rebuild cost is impossible. In most cases it will be condition of the cylinder bores that determines whether to rebuild or replace as far as economics go.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

+1 to to the dj ...
I got rod knock on my M20b25 last winter.
Found a good condition, 130k-mile short block. I think I paid $90 for it.
Slapped in some new bearings and oil pump, since we could.
Bolted on my rebuilt cylinder head.
Voila.
I'm saving the old block and parts for an overbore-based rebuild as a long-term plan. That engine will then go back into the e30.

yea or get a complete long block. m20s can be had for a few hundred bucks. Snag one up and just swap everything over.
my gathering is that you dont have much wrench time... (could be wrong) but the simplest and easiest way to get the car back on the road would be to swap engines completely

You are correct some wrench time but not a lot the most i've done is mthe vanos on the e46 but not a motor swap. I would like to keep the head since it is an 885; will look for a long block first unless I find a good motor (this motor only had 157K miles and that is low for an 87).yea or get a complete long block. m20s can be had for a few hundred bucks.
