I have an 86e chassis with an i harness and brain etc. What color wires do i need to connect together to get the tach to work since the connectors and wire colors are different?

If your harness was from a 9/87 or later 325i/is/ic the tach and econometer signals are routed through C101, which is how the later cars are wired. Cars up to 8/87 have a connector off the engine harness near the DME connector for those signals. To make the tach work you'll have to modify the harness to extract those signals. See http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm for the diagram for the harness you have to find the wires to pick off.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I did the same to my car. If you search the threads around for that swap, some dude did an excellent write up. I went from 85e to 89i and it all works perfect.
