Pulse sensor on the spark plug wires

what does it do?

I replaced my old wires and it had the pulse sensor on it, my new wires doesnt have the sensor attached to spark plug wire#6 and its throwing the check engine light...how can i get the pulse sensor on my new wires without damaging it?

All it does is tell the car what stroke its on so it fires the injectors in banks of 3 instead of in banks of 6. It makes no difference in performance, and maybe a marginal difference in fuel economy.

Mine was off and i had no check engine light, are you sure its pulse sensor related?

It could be possible to remove the boots and slide the sensor off, though i am not completely sure as ive never tried it.

Not sure what wires your running, but i was able to get a single replacement wire from IE when i messed up my pulse sensor plug.

you could cut the wire,
put the pulse sensor on

recrimp the fitting on the wire.


Or B, just recycle that one wire from your old set..

recrimping a wire requires no special tools although its much easier if you get one. The tool will pay for itself next time you make spark plug wires, especially for a rip off brand like bmw, it will cost you 20$ for higher quality wires that basically last forever vs 80 or whatever you just paid for disposible ones.

thanks for the response and info, i dont think it could be anything else, no engine check light before the wires replacement. I tired pulling on the side that plugs to the cap and the wire snapped right off the boot.

great idea! but sadly i decided to pull on the boot and ruin it.

now what you do is

cut the old wire

take the pulse sensor off

cut the boot off the other one be careful not to mess up the metal part underneath.

scrunch the metal part in size but dont ruin it. put the pulse sensor over it. fix the metal part so it works. then put the cut boot back on

sounds like a genius idea! i already have the pulse sensor off, i ripped the boot off and pulled it out. So ill try it on the old wires first for practice before cutting the new.

are you sure? cause mines was attached to 6, the longest of them all...can anyone confirm this?

OP just has his cylinder numbering back-asswards. Where did you buy these plug wires from?

i got them off an 87 325i, the wires were "like new" but it didnt have the pulse sensor on it.

Its attached to 6 not 1 (6 being the one closest to the firewall)

because #6 is the pulse that the ECU is expecting to see.

the engine will run without it, but it's definitely better to have it. 2 banks of 3 injectors is bad enough. Another disadvantage of all 6 going off at once is the rail pressure drops a lot more between pulses.

Running without it will cause an off throttle lag. You'll definitely regret not having it. I've tried it both ways to verify. "e" wires don't have them while "i"wires do.

Correct! I'm experiencing the throttle lag :(

I did some experimenting on my old wires today and cannot
figure how I'm gonna get that pulse sensor on the wire....only
option other then buying a new set is to cut it and rewire, hmmm
dont know if I wanna do that!
