"Normal" charge for head gasket replacement at a shop?
What would be a "normal" charge for a head gasket replacement at a shop, barring any other significant issues?
A couple hours' labor? More?
lots to consider really.
lolwiththeface said it...it's "easy" if you're used to turning wrenches and can measure torq specs without much hassle.
why are you chaning your headgasket?
might want to consider decking your head if you overheated and blew it...all that work only to put a bunk head back on would be a useless waste of time

Say a person brings an already worked head, and they need to get you the t belt and gasket set...whats acceptable labor?
I know by the book its something between 4-6 hours.......but a good mechanic should be able to do it quicker if I can read a few diy's and my bentley and confident in getting it done in that time....

Where in NC are you? I have a shop in Greensboro that does great work that will do it for $300 in labor. They are very familiar with BMW's, they are building a e30 m3 m50 turbo right now and quoted me $400 to do an m50 swap. They are a good group of guys who know how to build some crazy powerful cars. They have a 280z turbo they built that is putting down over 650 flbs of torque!
was quoted 97 an hour at 13 hours for the head gasket replacement....even if I brought a new head, and all associated parts....
I almost laughed in the guys face
That's out of range here. Even if I booked timed it including resurface head and valve job, it's 12.7hrs. He hit you with the max. 4.8-6.7hrs is what my estimator says, but there's always something else that should be replaced "while you are there".
$97 is average for a small general repair shop. If you can find someone you trust, they will charge actual and suggest proper extras, and generally beat the book by NOT charging full for let's say a rear main while doing a clutch.
