Are you talking about the studs that go into the head or those that go into the headers? I guess it really doesn't matter as both are treated the same way. Use a bottoming thread chasing tap to clean the threads in the head and the headers. Then run new studs in until they bottom and use new copper plated self locking nuts.

Well, they will sort of work. They will corrode very quickly and may loosen as the engine thermally cycles. Really not a good choice. The right nuts aren't expensive and can had from your dealer or on-line sources.
