Fitting earlier in-tank fuel pump to 86

I just bought an 1987+ fuel in-tank fuel pump instead of the required 86 one for my car. The seller tells me theres a way to make the newer one work (which has less inlets for hosing I believe) yet cannot fully explain it to me due to language differences. The car is currently at my mechanic so I cannot provide pictures.

I believe he says something to do with connecting two hoses, but I'm not sure.

You can't make that work without major surgery. You can make the in-tank high pressure pump from a late 318is work as it has both the output and return fittings. But the in-tank high pressure pump from a 9/87 or later 325i/is/ic lacks the return fuel fitting.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
