I have an 87 325ic. I cannot find any information on when the e30's first started having check engine lights... If mine has it, the bulb might be burnt out... Any thoughts???

Correct, and since they were kind of an afterthought, they are frequently missed on reinstallation of the instrument cluster since they have to be installed in a port separately.
If you wanted it for diagnostic reasons, the 153 DME in your '87 sports something like four not very helpful codes. Your better off diagnosing driveability issues the old fashioned way.-Dave
