thanks guys shit this was really useful. im thinking about a regrind since i.e is out of stock but i have a doubts about regrinds:/....... but this is me talking. id go for more midrange if i get an adjustable cam gear. aslong as high end isnt affected:) -
the "seat of the pants" gain isnt huge. infact the whole gain isnt huge. the main gain is in the midrange. your not going to really notice that a whole lot by the seat of your pants. theres a few HP for sure in there how much i cant say. it depends on the motor. no two are the same. if they are just slap dash and driven then your missing the main gains. intake, exhaust, retune are needed to get the most of out them. now that your driving on the cams without those done the added gain will again feel slight once they are done. but rest assured your getting gains.
as well as the main gain of midrange. it will also push your peak power up too. a dyno is where you need to see it. before and after runs. if you have that kind of access... like i do :P the joys of a bmw workshop with a dedicated dyno tuning section :P woot.Leave a comment:

this is totally untrue. The 885 responds very well to cam upgrades, if anything it comes undercammed given the size and flow potential of the stock ports. It runs into problems with lift over about 11mm, but lift is only part of the equation. and there are mods you can do to make it flow well up to 12+mm of lift.
I would definitely not agree with "274 or bust" either. You can use the more aggressive grinds, but to have an acceptable idle quality means ditching the stock electronics entirely. It also means your static compression ratio must make sense - you wouldn't want to run a schrick 304 with the stock 8.8:1 CR (even assuming the valves didn't smash into the pistons).
also - no, you don't *need* an adjustable cam gear. but, it's a wise investment if you want to get the most out of your cam. you can basically adjust the powerband how you like it - either more peak HP, or more midrange torque. I went for midrange since it's nicer to drive on the street.Last edited by nando; 04-30-2012, 04:31 AM.Leave a comment:

Basically what he said, but only ever so slightly. A Schrick 274* is a very mild cam.
There are so many aspects that come into play when choosing a camshaft. You have to take into account the amount of lift, duration, overlap, ect. all to suit the your engine combination and application its gonna be used. I'm no expert nor are many of the members on this forum. Your gonna have to read more into camshafts to understand what these number mean. I've only read into it a little.
If it were my engine I'd get a Schrick 284/272 dual pattern camshaft instead. Poorer flowing heads need more valve lift to allow more room for the fuel and air to come through, only to a level where you heads stops flowing cfm at x amount of lift. This camshaft still isn't radical but nice for a street car and it will go good with all the supporting mods you have already done to your car. But it would be better if you had more compression. So don't expect some serious gains.Leave a comment:

Also dont forget. Something like a cam needs extensive supporting mods for the engine to run well. I got some 19# injectors ready to go for you!Leave a comment:

Yikes! But still want the cam. Do u guys know who has em in stock?Leave a comment:

it gets lumpier. the ignition pulses will seem slower. and it could have a slightly more eratic feel to it. but its all normal.Leave a comment:

Akorcovelos cool story gtfo. Thanks everyone else. I already have an maf and chip upgrade bigger injectors and headers on my dd. If anyone knows Does it have a different feel when it idles compared to stock?Leave a comment:

Unfortunately the 885 head doesn't flow nearly as well as a hotter cam would like it to, the gains will be minimal.Leave a comment:

you DO NOT need an adjustable cam gear.....on a hotter cam then MAYBE...this depends on the condition of the block, head, and spacing between the valves and pistons...a 272 will not need an adjustable cam gear
injectors and a chip will definitely liven things up but you shouldn't run a cam too hard without a proper tune to go with it.....tune is way better
a few of the big guys on r3v, some who do machine work and build their own heads swear by the 274 or bust on NA motors....anything more and its considered unnecessary in their own wordsLeave a comment:
