    Weird knocking-esque noise from m20b25

I've had a weird noise pop up in my motor in the last week. It only happens when it is cold.

Any ideas as to what it could be? The only other problem with the motor is a somewhat rough idle when cold.

Recent pertinent maintenance = Timing belt/tensioner, water pump, and valve adjustment, all done by gregslow318i. 119k miles on the odo

    Any help would be great!

Sounds like my engine before it almost threw a rod,,

Im not sure what that noise is, but it sounds like it could be a rod. Using a stethoscope on the engine will help figure out the source of the noise. If it is a rod it will be louder on the bottom of the engine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Crap, that's not good news. I will get a stethoscope and figure out where it is coming from. How could I already have a rod going out on such a low mileage engine?

Also, would it be the rod bearings that need replacement or the rod itself?

Maybe because it had ran low on oil for a while earlier in its life?

Yeah Id say it is a rod too

connecting rod bearings would be what your replacing. it does sound like the beginning of "rod knock".

in case anyone who reads this isn't clear on it, here goes:

rod knock is when the rod bearing has developed excessive clearance through wear, and has enough "play" in the tolerances to allow the rod to "knock" on the crankshaft.

The sound appears to be coming from the bottom of the engine. It's louder when the motor is cold, when it's warm I barely hear it. How long can I go before changing them? I was planning on doing suspension work in a month or two, can I hold off till then?

Didn't listen to the video, but I have a rod knock like noise on my m20 also, and everywhere I've brought it has immediately identified it as rod knock... until I press the clutch and it goes away. Its been this way for a year and hasn't gotten any worse.

If it goes away with the clutch in, I think it may just be the trans input shaft pilot bearing.

Not a serious issue. searching will dig up more info...
