Cooling hoses, specifically heater core connections

I've had the motor out of this car for a while now.... Does the hose from the rear of the head go into the upper or lower heater core connection?

This is an 89 325i motor going into a 88 SETA if it makes a difference..

Also the I motor has some kind of bypass valve, is that removable or necessary? I couldn't find the part in RealOEM or find much on the internet about it. Only one post said something about it being a recall. Mentioned the valve bypasses coolant around the heater core if it got too hot as there were heater core issues...

And I ask because the hose from the back of the SETA motor didn't have this bypass hose, it was one hose from the back of the head to the heater core connection.

edit: Found that the hose from the back of the head goes to the lower connection of the heater core...

I have good hoses of both the early and late systems, just trying to figure out if the bypass assembly is necessary with the 88MY.

I took it out. It's supposed to protect your nads if the heater blows up, but we have
          enough kids already,
AND it can't do that anyhow, as the WHOLE heater core is pressurized, not just
the one side the bypass is on.
