    fuel pump only works if i hit it.

    Just replaced my pump, I drove it 10 miles to my friends no issues. Drove almost home, and it dies. Fuse is good, relay is good, if I crank it it won't start. If I crank and give a pound on the pump, it starts strong. It won't last long (a couple seconds, then die out as if the fuse blew) and I had to spend my time driving/shifting/steering in one hand while mashing this pump w/ my bentley.

    Anything to check out? Before the pump died, never had any fuse popping or fuel pump hitting rituals. I will recheck ground by drivers seat, but other then that I'm stumped

    Having to hit the pump to make it work is *the* test for having a bad fuel pump. Best option is to either replace it, or get very good at hitting the fuel pump till that stops working.

      that happened to me. i carried a rubber mallet all the time in the car... hehehe. Until I got my lazy butt and replaced them.

          my buddy replaced a fpump in his late style e30 and he just had to do it to start the car and then it stopped and has been dailying it for the past couple days.

          The pump doesnt whine or anything like that which is weird too. Basically went from driving perfect to needing to hit it every second that the car is on. I just love oem bmw fuel pumps...

            If you need another I think I have one sitting in the garage...used but shouldn't need to be hit to get it to work.

              Which pump did you buy? I hope that it is not Airtek. How do you pound on the pump while driving? It is in the back seat.

                The solution here is to extend all the fuel lines, and power connections, then mount the pump in your center console. Works every time.

                    It is an oem replacement later style, a buddy gave it to me.

                    I had the seat and fuel pump cover up, because I had been popping fuses so i would regularly disconnect the fuel pump harness before replacing the fuse.

                    I would just bang it right on top of there the level sender is, or just basically anywhere there, and It would go from the hiccup to full power.
