    M54 Crank for Stroker?

I am looking at a crank from a 328i E46 M54 engine, or so the seller says. I want to use this for a stroker in my M20b25. My question is that according to one thread that I read from the UK, you should only use pre 1998 crank because of the Dual vanos upgrade to the engines. It also states that a dual Vanos or TU crank can be used but requires more modifications to block and pistons.

Can anyone enlighten me and tell me if I can use this crank just as well as an older one? Or what modifications must be done to make this crank work if I move ahead? Lastly, if anyone one in Norcal has a non vanos crank from and M52 they want to sell that will drop in that would be great.

Sorry for the questions, but I did not find my answers on the search, but maybe I did not dig deep enough. Thanks in advance:D

My buddy has one in his turbo m20, with stock everything in the motor beside the O-ringed block..

It's add a really big torque, but he always used to have problems with it like something breaking or so, I don't know exactly but it's really a great upgrade

I have one but I'm thinking of putting pistons, rods from e36 328i and that crank

An e46 328i will have an m52b28tu, not an m54

What Spec said, the e46 328's have an m52b28tu which does have the largest counterweights of any stroker cranks that I have seen. So bascially you would need to either cut down the counter weights a lot as well as the skirts of the pistons, assuming you aren't getting custom forged ones.

Are you going to a 2.8L?

Thanks for the help guys. It is an EBay thing and I am not aware enough to know exactly which crank I really should have. I am doing something similiar to your 2002 build tink'. I am working towards a stroker M20 for my '75 2002. I have an M20b25 and an M20b27. I was looking to use the m20b25 "i" pistons. The block measures good and still has all the crosshatching. I was going to hone and re-ring. The 130mm rods after they are reconditioned and an 84mm crank. Any suggestions or comments. I would like to be in the 9.5-10.0:1 compression range.

To get that compression your probably going to need either custom pistons or the high compression euro pistons which were ~9.75:1 (I forget what they came in though). If you haven't checked out the stoker threads on the 'other e30 site' I'd recommend you do that, they have a wealth of information in them. That's where I started and by the end I was able to answer most of my own questions.

I've got a set of those pistons with a bit of damage, but overall good shape ;)

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.
