What is this down stream from my Fuel Filter??

Hey, Tracking a strong smell of fuel in the car and some hard start and idling issues related to fuel delivery.

Car is a 1987 325is, so it has the in tank transfer pump and the high pressure pump under the drivers side rear tire.

I was just checking all my fuel lines for obvious leaks and came across what looks like a FPR in the fuel line just after fuel filter. Here's a picture:



Since I can't find any reference to it in the Bentley, my first inclination is to remove it and put new line there, cause there is certainly a leak at this device.

But before I go hacking a slashing I thought I'd ask.

This has come up a couple of times lately. Its a fuel pulse damper & the consensus is you can remove it without consequence. However,if its leaking and you DONT remove it...that has consequence :shock:

Thanks. I looked at the fuel system diagram in the Bentley and it appeared that the damper was in the fuel line AFTER the FPR - which doesn't make sense, but anyhow.

Ok new fuel line and filter and away she goes.

My 84 M10 has it in the engine compartment. They both quack

RealOEM indicates that the Damping Unit is NLA and to be replaced by fuel hose:
