Uh oh. Another "is my car too loud?" thread...

i've searched and there never seems to be much of a resolution.

Just got my HG changed (shop, not myself) on 84 Eta, and the head was slightly warped, but the machine shop got it back into specs.

The auto shop adjusted the valves, put everything back together, fired it up and heard this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpHEgqDwEbA

The sound cuts out toward the end but it's long enough to convey the point.

I mean this bitch is LOUD.

Then they pulled the valve cover, readjusted the valves again. The guy was concerned about it for me, but stated the car drove fine, which I verified. He's a good guy and pretty honest, so he said he'd fix it if something ended up going wrong.

All this has been done in the last 10k- tbelt, v belts, water pump, tstat, coolant changed (3x), plugs,

It's also kinda taking its time returning to normal idle, which is a shade above 1k rpm. They put 5w-30 in it and said since I normally use 20w-50 that might quiet it down some... but WTF? I paid $1k to have loud ass diesel sounding car?

Something doesn't seem right, and wanted your opinion.

I know there are two opinions- 1. something about "valve lash" and the valves not being adjusted correctly. If you think that's the case, what SPECIFICS can I tell the guy so he'll understand how to fix it??
    2. It's supposed to be loud.

Peer into the valve cover filler neck while its running.

It will induce a vacuum leak but you will want to see if oil is spraying from the oil spraybar and getting on the cam while revving.

The last time I head that sort of noise, the cause was a mis-timed cam. And that is what it sounds like this time.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Ok. What if it's not? I'm guessing it is since I drove it several miles yesterday and it was fine.

Jim, not real sure what the fix is for that? Is it in the Bentley?

I think he means you have to check the timing marks.

these engines sound like sewing machines when they are running right. Yours does not sound like a sewing machine. It almost sounds like a sucking swishing sound.
Change the oil to 20W-50 and some Lucas oil stabilizer and report back with a new vid

Did you ever figure out what the noise is? I'm having a similar issue...
