    All that said...

    It think if i can figure out how to align the fan/shroud/ radiator it will be OK. Question is why is it so off?

      Take it all back off and check for missing bolts washers spacers etc. Also double check your fan clutch.

        To those who have done the timing belt and have removed the fan...

        How close to the radiator is the fan? I remember being able to remove the fan and slide it right out. However today, while removing it, i had to have a friend pry back on the radiator and pry it out to get clearance...

        A quick r3V search about fan shroud rubbing came back with motor mount issues... Seeing if this is a possibility. Maybe my original clutch wasn't bad but just misaligned like the current one is and hitting the shroud???

          Try and bleed the system from the overflow hose on the radiatoor not the air bleed screw as the bleed screw is below the top radiator hose and always leaves air in the system.

          millions of bmw owners are always confused by this.

          for what it matters is the coolant light on?
          How would you bleed the system from the overflow hose?

            ok

            you pick the pincher thing and take it off the radiator.

            run the engine until all thats coming out is water and put it back on.

            if you bleed it from the bleeder screw just remember theres still air in the system. cause the upper radiator hose is above the bleeder screw.

            always watch the guage for a few days, always run the car with the heater ging when it gets past the middle stop and put water in.

            when the air is finally out the heater will blow hot

              The fan should always spin, not just when warm. You are getting interference from the shroud. Remove it and go from there.

              And, there ain't much clearance to remove the fan..

                I cant remember if this is the car that took me 2 days to remove the fan or not.

                I dont think it is but on the other hand i cant remember which car it is

                  Fan shrouds and fans sizes changed in 9/87. Clutch stayed the same. I bought a new fan, supposely the right size, from Pelican and it hit the shroud. Went back to the original with no problems. A bad auxillary fan is a common problem with overheating in traffic. Mine had frozen up.

                    Unless A/C is on, the aux fan has nothing to do with overheating while idling or in stop and go traffic. The engine cooling fan is all that is necessary then.
