what does a 272 cam do for an ix??

Just bought this 88ix and the po said he put a 272 cam in the head. New head also. What type of hp or anything else would this give the car from stock. Would it cause the car to idle rough?
    thanks for any help,

It'll move your power band higher. Some people have rougher idles

      more power above 3500rpm

I would assume above 3000rpm or so it would give more power. I have heard that a better exhaust system would be better with this cam.
The car does seem to want to really go above 3500rpm

272 is pretty mild. I wouldn't expect much of a change in idle quality. cams also don't just "move the powerband up". should be some increase in power but a cam is just one part out of many on a motor, supporting mods will make it more effective. but go too far and you end up with a race motor that sucks to live with on the street.

          some mild mods

I need an exhaust anyway, so I will look for one that is better than what I have. Maybe something with the air intake filter, but not sure if that is a good idea. Do a good tune up. I do not need power to go through snow at this point:). The cam was on the car, so not going to remove it anytime soon.

air filter alone isn't going to do much. the entire intake from the airbox to the head is basically sized together.

if you want to keep it simple, get a chip made for your cam and leave the rest stock. maybe add some headers. the cat and muffler aren't going to be very restrictive.

              chip for 272?

Where would one get this chip? Would a free flow exhaust, chip, the cam, and air intake make any difference? I have to replace the exhaust anyway:). Not sure about what type of an intake?

              any example of headers???

I think miller claims like 30whp from there CAI.

Here we go. 25hp/tq+ (meaning even more could be seen).

                        So this CAI has everything:)

So the chip MAF etc is what I would need, but then with a cat-back High flow and 272 cam, are we talking about having the car tuned at a speed shop?..Oh and a header would be added on the car also.

Anyone have a picture of the Miller CAI on an e30?

you won't gain 30hp from increasing the size of stuff in front of the throttle plate in size. that's total nonsense marketing fluff.

look, the TB plate is only 60mm in size (2.36"). even if I totally remove my airbox and run an open throttle (which I have done), I still see a pretty hefty pressure drop through the throttle, and that doesn't even adress the intake manifold. increasing 30hp because the size of the intake tract changed? except it goes from 3" to 2.36"? come on. people will eat it up because they're desperate for the "holy grail" of bolt ons but there's no way.

It's even been proven that the AFM on a basically stock motor is hardly even a restriction (under 5hp on a car that was tuned on MAP, with/without the AFM in place).

also, you get a "free" random CEL with every WAR chip sold. :p

                            30hp?

Yeh, I was thinking if system could give 30hp everyone would be buying one:).
Once I get everything repaired, then I think I will put some headers on the car.
I think I have a few thinks that need to be done first....:)
