What is this part? Do I need it?

What is the job of the rubber stopper (P# 36) that lives between the front subframe and special bracket mounted on the trans (pretty sure that's where I saw it). The rubber stopper thing broke off, and I can't find a part number for a replacement. Should I bother?
    Thanks!

You don't "need" it. I have not had one for years. It is there to prevent the engine from launching out in a collision.

I always wondered wtf that thing was for. It always looked like such a random piece, but it all makes sense now! Thanks

Thanks for the info! I won't bother replacing that rubber stopper until my car is ready for judging on the concourse!

Did all years come with one of these? My 86 did not have one but my 91 parts car did.

Majority of cars coming into shop are missing them. We always replace and or install one. Less then $5 and does it job stopping engine from moving forward. Not just during accidents, as trans/eng mounts wear down its common for the engine to move and start touching the rad(clutch fan).

I figure if I need that, the radiator's probably already wrapped around someone else's
                bumper.

That said, I made a bumper out of UHMW that did a good job.
