pulling m20 engine, remove gear selcetor on tranny?

just like the title says, I pulled my 87 m20 for a lower mileage 88 m20. im putting the tranny on the new engine and dropping it in today. should I disconnect the gear selector from the transmission... it looks like it would be a bitch to put back on

You should be able to pull it and drop it in, with the lever installed.

You can do it that way, but I think it easier to install the engine/transmission with the shifter disconnected and still in the car and re-connect it after. With the engine sitting on the motor mounts, the transmission cross member off, and the drive shaft still disconnected, it is pretty easy to re-connect the shifter. The inverse of that applies to removing the engine/transmission.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Agreed, I always install the shifter assembly after the engine/trans are in.
