How much hp should I expect to gain with a chip?

I've got a 325i and was wondering how much I should expect to gain (horsepower and torque). And which do you recommend, MarkD or WAR, etc..

To a great degree this depends on the condition of the engine, and specifically the condition of the head. If both are really good condition around 10-15hp at the top end is a realistic expectation. A tuner chip is the simple solution, but a WAR chip is more flexible if you are willing to put the time and money into dyno tuning.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I'm just very skeptical... feel like people never dyno their cars after and just feel the placebo effect.

I never dynoed my car but after a top end refresh and a mark D chip I definely felt noticeable gains in mid range power. This was
        On my 89 325ix

None.. You might get some more rpm but the stock head cant take more than 7000 so the gain will be the possibility to brake it.

unless you get a custom chip it is pretty hard to say on a car that has alot of miles, i have seen before and after gains from off the shelf chips one of them was the markD 91 for the M20B25

This is all but dyno but, I didn't feel much more horsepower. To me the only differences were the increase in rev limit and throttle response seemed to be a little quicker.

Plus if your car ever dies / battery is removed it becomes null right?

I have no idea what you are asking. I have a mark d chip, it is a part of the ECU.

But doesn't the tune delete if the battery ever disconnects / dies on your car? It returns back to stock.

no that is not how it works.
In laments terms Resetting the ECU makes the engine run exactly according to the maps on the chip. Over time the ECU kind of adapts and "learns" and correction factors are applied to the chips mapping. resetting just gets rid of the adaptation part leaving the chip as it was

Which chips would you guys recommend for a 325i in that case (taking into consideration MarkD chips are on sale this weekend?
