    valve adjustment m20

Today I was doing the valve adjustment on the m20. I noticed that all the exhaust valves are tight and all the intakes are loose. I am adjusting them with the cam lobs pointing down and both valves tappets are clicking. Well, one exhaust valve was not clicking much. Setting at 10 thousands. Does that sound right to you guys/gals? The head is clean, rebuilt 15k ago. Everything looks super good. The shop tech said the valves in the middle sound loud to him???? Car sat for 12hrs it is cold!!!!
What do you think. I was planning on just finishing up in the morning and get the engine going and see what it sounds like.

Adjust everything according to spec and see how it sounds. It seems that you are doing everything correctly.

If your eccentrics are flat spotted they'll make louder noises and will be more difficult to set accurately because the feeler might not contact the eccentric at the correct point. Replace them in that case and it'll quiet down considerably.

        thanks for the help

Re-adjusted everything. Seems a bit more noise, but the car runs so much better. Going to take it out today and see how it does at a little higher speed. Car is running a 272 cam, but I don't think that should make any difference.
        thanks for the input.

Or just place the feeler between the cam lobe and the rocker arm...

It's funny I just redid mine today and had the same story! Maybe backwards though all intakes were good before and the exhaust were loose.
I too readjusted everything to spec took the car for a spin and WOW noticible difference from yesterday, but also louder.

Which got me thinking, why are there no sounds clips of a properly adjusted m20?
Hop on YouTube and you can listen all day to problem motors but nothing to compare and confirm you did correctly.
I love that people ask stupid questions so I dont have.

If you're still not happy with the adjustment, definitley pick one of these up: http://www.bavauto.com/fland.asp?part=113070 Make's the job take half the time, and adjusts them perfectly. I noticed a huge difference after.
