    Engine Idea

Hey all. Just wanting to get some input on an idea for some extra performance from my car.

I have an 87 325i vert. The PO did absolutely NOTHING to preserve my car. The engine knocks for about 2-3 seconds on cold start then goes away. Probably from lack of maintenance as the engine has some sludge build up.

I have a short block I bought from a buddy of mine that came out of an 89 325i. The engine suffered a failed iming belt. The lower end and rotating assy are in really good shape with no significant damage to the pistons. The cross hatching is still very visible and the engine rotates smoothly and easily.

I want to get a head from a salvage yard and have it checked and fixed as needed at a machine shop. I found a regrind 272 cam from Ireland Engineering, and wanted to install that in the head, along with installing a maf conversion kit with chip, also from Ireland Engineering, with 20# rebuilt Mustang injectors I have laying around.

Just curious if anyone would know approximate performance gains with this setup, or even if this combo will work.

Any ideas, except forced induction, would be greatly appreciated. Not looking for anything wild as this is my dd.......

Im guestimating whp, not crank power... I think there are a few M20 stroker guys with hotter cams pushing 170+whp on the forums here... most of the dynos range from 150-180'ish whp...

You have war chip, mega squirt and a few other options that you already mentioned for tuning. That seems to be a very personal subject so try what you like and go with it!

WAR chip, yes with MAF conversion from Ireland Engineering. No MS - too complicated for what I want with the car. I just want some mild driveable performance out of my car, nothing too exotic like FI.

I guess I will start hunting for a head to go on this engine and proceed with the build up. Thanks for the input...

ive never had an M20 run as well as it does when converting to MAF. I guess you can't expect a lot from a 20+ year old air flow meter that half a dozen people have probably tampered with before you owned the car (ive never owned an E30 that didn't have the top of the AFM removed at some stage).
Just a little project im working on

I have heard tons of people rave about the gains on off line performance increases, albeit mild, but enough for me. And inTOTALLY agree with the afm comment. Too many hands in the cookie jar it seems.....
