    Detonation damage?

My engine overheated and took it to my mechanic for inspection. After seeing slight milkshake stuff in the coolant. Mechanic decided to pull the head off and was ready to replace head gasket and was shocked to find damage on the head.

    He sent me these pictures.

Combustion chamber #4, 5, 6 were all damaged with #5 been worst. Damaged worked its way through the chamber, head gasket and reached coolant passage. Cylinder 1, 2, 3 did not have this issue. All 6 pistons were okay though.

Mechanic said these were result of detonations, but pics looked a bit different than other detonated M20. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...ght=detonation

Just like to confirm if damage are indeed detonation.

    Thanks.

Of the three pictures, 4 and 6 look like classic signs of detonation. 5 looks like something went bouncing around in there and caused that damage.

I also agree. Seen this on a ton of m20 heads, filed them down, did all the machine work and they are holding just fine. One is making 357whp...
