I looked at (potential purchase) an 88 325i w/ 130k that had some ticking/tapping noise coming the top end area after start up and idle. After about a 10 min test drive the noise was gone, eng sounded fine. lifters? exhaust leak? a rod noise wouldn't go away would it? the car apparently is no longer a daily driver (maybe driven once a wk). How concerned should I be? Overall, you can tell the 1 owner car has been well taken care of. Before I purchase it, i'm having the noise diagnosed by a tech. Any thoughts?

The valves probably just need adjusting. A bad rod bearing will make more noise on a hot engine (thinner oil). Piston slap will be worse when cold and may go away when the engine is hot, but at 130k that is unlikely. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
