    valve, rod, or rocker?

guys, my eta has started making a tapping/knocking sound on startups. judging by the sound it's only one cylinder and not all. I know i'm over due for a valve adjustment but this sounds different. i'm pulling the vc off today but was wondering what to look for as far as lifters and rods go. i'm a shade tree guy and the problem might not be obvious to me. the sound does fade to almost non existent after reaching normal operating temp.
oh yea, she has approx. 380,000 on the clock but still pulls strong.

There's no rods just a cam, rockers, and valves. Ticking is normal for an m20. But if it sounds excessive and since you all ready said its time for a valve job I would start with that. The rockers are pretty much the weakest link there, I'm not saying there bad but I would look over all them very well for a signs of stress or wear.

It might not even be from the top end. If you say it goes away once it warms up then it could be piston slap. That wouldn't surprise me with that many miles. A good way to check the bottom end is when the motor is making the sound just pull a plug wire one at a time and see if it goes away. This takes the load off that cylinder.

Hope this helps some, good luck

so, if it's piston slap, what are the dangers of leaving it as is? i'm not going to tare down an engine to repair it with this many miles on it. what causes piston slap?

My car has been doing it for 3 years. But I also got a second motor ready to swap in for a turbo build. I would suggest taking it easy on it when it's cold and keep up the oil changes. My guess is that it will be fine for years but then you never know what to expect.

well, when pulling the plugs so as to b able to roll her to tdc I came up with the #1 leed not being firmly attached. hmmmm, would this cause a knock? adjusted the valves and none where really out of adjustment. goter back together and guess what? knock is gone.

            me so happy:D:D:D
