    Torx starter bolt size?

I have to do a starter on an e34 with the m20, and I do not have torx bits. It is a torx bolt with a 16mm (yes.. a bit wierd?) nut on the end of the bolt holding the starter in.

I got a torx socket, but it was for the smaller size torx in the bell housing (the 4 bolts that are towards the bottom of the bell housing size) I need the next bigger one, if anyone knows the size off their head.

Id rather not keep making trips to the auto store regetting more sockets, or use a 12 point socket. Thanks!

I am pretty sure the next largest, and proper size for those is e12 socket. .. may want to confirm. you can find a e10-e14 socket set for cheap at an auto parts store too and youll be golden for sure

I can confirm that the smaller torx in the bellhousing are e10, and the larger are e12 for those wondering the same thing.

i didn't even use a torx, it was way too crammed in there to fit a socket. I just wedged a screw driver down there just enough to hold the torx while I loosened up the nut. I guess an e34 engine bay would be different though

Nope, no room on an e34. I used a 3/8 torx with a reducer to 1/4 inch and it still sucks, firewall is too close. I will try the screw driver idea, but might be kinda hard to torque.

Shoot the starter nuts down with some PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench. You should be able to spin the nuts off of the Torx bolts pretty easily, unless the threads are all crapped up. Could you get some channel locks onto the Torx heads? How about 4ft of extensions and an E12 socket? That's how I usually get at the other top tranny bolts, from back by the guibo!
