327i with 731 head, which cam

Alright boys, with the new eta kicking it back east for a month or so till I can get back there to drive it back, time to plan this winter's project.

Ive been out of the game for a while, and have had years to think about this, and will be going with a 731 head swap for higher compression and relative ease of the switch. The debate between a built M20 and M50 goes on forever, but I do not want a 90's engine in my pristine 80's car. Looking to stay period correct and factory parts for the most part.

That being said, I've dialed in the 731 head swap pretty well, but have little experience with e30's with any sort of a different cam. This is a daily, and if anyone remembers my history here Im not the type that is willing to put up with some harshness or difficulty. I want this to drive to the point where no one would know there was any sort of mods to it performance wise.

I realize this 'swap' has been covered a lot, but not much in terms of specific cams. What say the collective?

Goals are 160hp with 170 tq at the wheels, this will be paired with BavAuto headers, Turner chip (most likely upgraded to Mark D 327i), IE exhaust, and every other wear part in the engine bay replaced. Thing will basically be brand new outside of the block and internals.

This car will never see a turbo as well, once the head and necessary accessories are swapped, this will be last this motor sees outside of maintenance.

we went with a 731 head with hd rockers and a 272 cam. markD chip and 17lb injectors. i'm very happy with this setup, still puts a smile on my face when i stand on it. holds a steady 700 idle and not lumpy at all with the 272. sometime down the road i'd like to do headers but other than that i'm content with this combo.

A 272, imho, is a waste of money unless it falls into your lap. It is not much of an upgrade and you're going to wish you had gone with something a little more aggressive, probably (it happened to me). Bimmerheads regrinds are reasonably priced, and they can set you up with a nice 280/274 dual grind.

Also, you should probably look into what the Mark D 327i chip calls for, because unless it is to the exact specs of your motor you are going to be missing out on some horsepower.

id use a 272, you are only at 9:1. its best to go conservative on a DD.
