    DME 173 Chip Identification

Can anyone ID this chip? No sticker on it. I was told it was a performance chip by previous owner.

The cover is still on the chip.

Sorry about that, didn't know they even came with a cover. My spare ECU didn't have a cover over the chip and I'm new to E30s.

Pulled the cover and it says:

      Atmel
      AT27C256R
      70PV
      0707

Anyone know anything about this chip?

Post a pic of the chip. I have a few stock ones at home I could compare it to, but I'm working all day. I'm sure someone else can chime in.

Here's a pic. Previous owner told me it was a chip by a German maker who is no longer in business...don;t know if there is any truth to that or not. It does seem a little stronger than my Turner/Conforti, especially up top. Redline is higher than the Conforti which is about 6800. I've never hit the limiter with this chip.

Oddly, that look nothing like my chip. Yours is an eeprom (electronic erasable programmable memory, while the one I pulled out of a junkyard 173 is an eprom (erasable with UV light). From pictures I see, the eprom is stock, so maybe yours is an aftermarket chip?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Thanks for looking Andy. I have given the Turner chip a try for a few days and there is no comparison. The other chip is WAY stronger. It pulls much harder and feels more responsive.

The only downside that I see to this chip so far is it seems to have removed the rev limiter, but at 7k you're already out of the power and and need to shift. I only wish I knew who wrote the program.

Go pick up one of these:

The tuner likely put some sort of info into the program.
Better yet, of its that good a tune make me a copy!

I just ordered a chip programmer if anyone wants me to try and id their chips? You can send em. I will download em and hopefully if i cam get all the major tunes i can simply check em against each other.

That chip is an EEPROM with a build date of Feb, 2007.

That's all you can tell from the numbers...
