piston reuse info.

Thought y'all might like to know. With my rebuild resulting from worn out rings (at 172,000 miles) I checked the pistons and piston ring groves. They were still in spec. so my machines bead blasted the skirts which swells them back up oh, .0005, and also makes the skirts carry oil better than the smooth skirts.

Made sure all the beads were out by washing in an ultrasonic bath for thirty minutes at the machine shop, then in the parts washer for thirty minutes,
then back home I scrubbed them out some more with a tooth brush and put them in my small ultrasonic for another 15 minutes. Can't be to clean after beading. ;)

Engine reassembled now and not much longer till in the car.

oil changed every 3k, not beat on cold while we owned it.


But, I suspect in the years prior to us it may have been run hot once at least. Perhaps that accelerated wear.

Oh yea, if you bead blast a piston make sure not to bead blast the ring grooves. That will swell them to tight for the rings. Clean the grooves with a piece of the old rings and check the clearance with the new rings and a feeler gauge.
