SETA Piston/Rod Weight Reduction for 2.7 build

Has anyone tried/or seen someone lighten the stock pistons/rods on their M20? I picked up a SETA long block for cheap and was planning on refreshing it before dropping it in my car with a 885 head and was wondering if this would be worth it or even doable to decrease some of the weight of the rotating assembly. Also would this negate the possibility to run a light weight flywheel? Is there any other machine work that could be done or recommended for a mild performance gain while I am at it? Thanks in advance..

rods are done all the time (look for youtube videos)

pistons, I don't think would be worth it. the compression ratio is only 8.5:1, and where the lighter pistons would benefit (higher RPM) the 8.5:1 CR isn't suited well to the cam you'd want for the higher powerband.

have you considered saving a few hundred bucks more for some aftermarket pistons? it's kind of like a can of worms of course - you'll want to build the head with a cam too - but the end results is much more worth it.

if you just want to build a 2.7i, I'd put the head on and call it a day.

to answer your other question, yes you can still run a lighter flywheel.
