    HELP! stupid question, cylinder order!

So I recently did my timing belt and replaced the water pump, cam seal, timing belt tensioner etc. I put the motor back together and drove it for a good 10k. Everything was great! Suddenly I started hearing a rattling from the timing cover. I pulled everything apart at HOLY &^%^@$&% my timing belt tensioner was broken right off the plate(faulty part). It still blows my mind it was running fine!

Anyways upon taking everything apart, the crank moved slightly and I need to know what cylinder is #1 so I can align the crank and the cam to TDC to put the belt on. Is there an easy way to do this? Will I be fine as long as the timing marks are aligned? For some reason I feel like I should be able to line up the marks and just put the belt on. Am I right?

Any help would be great, I am trying to finish this in the next few hours.

Cyl 1 is closest to the front of the car
Crank pulley mark at the timing cover
Cam mark at the head (rotates twice to 1 revolution of crank)
Small adjustments can be OK. Dont force anything if it stops, valves will touch.
Things turn easier with spark plugs out

Thank you. Thats what I found but I wanted to be certain.

So my head has a 2.7 stamp on it and the timing belt is really tight. Does my car have a 2.7 head on a 2.5 block?

Was this a new tensioner, do you have any pics of how it broke?

Yeah. The broken one is on the left. It was a gates brand tensioner. The new on is on the right. Notice how much thicker the shaft is. giggity. The new one was purchased at BAVauto for an additional $10 more. It is a spannrolle brand?.

wow, everything about the one on the left looks cheesy. the bearings and everything are much smaller.

given how critical that part is and how much stress it's under, there's basically no point in trying to save $10 on one. bummer that you got burned..

Well I bought a full timing belt kit. I know that Gates makes lots of performance timing belts so I figured it was a good buy. Came with everything, seals, gaskets, belts etc. Guess I was wrong. What really sucks is that the tensioner I took off was fine, and I tossed it out. :( oh well, you live and you learn.
