    Valve Adjustment --Help--

    Hi!
I have a '87 325is with 246k. I dont think the previous owner ever adjusted valves. Anyway, I adjusted them twice to make sure everything is alright but I still feel like there is something wrong. And yes I adjusted it with a .25mm feeler gauge. When I finish adjusting, there feels like there is too much play in the rocker, meaning I can shake the rocker even though everything is adjusted. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Yeah it was like that for mine too. A bit of chattering noise is normal. As long as its not a loud knocking. Besides it's not good to have them too tight on the camshaft.

I just encountered this as well. I ended up pulling the rocker clamps and squeezing them a bit so they clamped harder. There's also a groove they need to slide into upon reinstall.

      I'm talking about part #12

If you're talking about side- to- side play, yeah, squeezing the clip will help.
That movement doesn't really matter, but I do it too.

If you're talking about the tip of the rocker moving side- to- side when the body isn't sliding,
the rockers/shaft might be worn, allowing slop. This isn't a terminal problem- it'll go
for a long while, and you'd fix it when something else gave way.

If you're talking about excessive lash, well, if you did it right, yeah, there should
be a 'click' in each rocker. You start to get a feel for it after doing it about a dozen times...

And finally, if it really hasn't ever been lashed, new eccentrics will help a lot with noise.
The old eccentrics will have flats worn into them, and when you turn them, they hit the
tops of the valves with a 'point'. They're pretty cheap, and easy to change (if you're
VERY careful not to lose parts!) and for people who hate that chatter, it's worth it.

way more than you wanted to know.

        t
now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

I once adjusted mine the same way and thought that all the noise was normal hence the nickname "sewing machine" for an M20 that I've heard. I did find another thread on here about the adjustment and re-adjusted my rockers/valves to a new proper setting and there is no more noise, you almost don't hear the engine run. The setting I used was .010" not the .25mm the car (motor) runs very smooth now.

...use the search you should find it.

I also adjusted my valves tighter. I think they're at .08" both intake and exhaust. My engine has very little noise. I made a thread about it. Look it up in my profile.

To an extent... I did this, and it just makes your adjustments "seat" a bit better.

                25.4mm = 1"

                25.4mm/100 = .254mm

                1"/100 = .01"

You are using a ten thou measurement; when the motor is warm, you should hear the injectors over the valves.

Personally, I run 5-6 checks, and probably turn the motor about 100 times (Plugs out, and warm to touch motor...). By the time you finish they should have seated, and you should have a good adjustment ;)
