Help!!! How Do I Rev Higher?

    Ive got a 1986 2.7es with the i cam, throttlebody, intake,etc....

    my dilemma---

stock motronic BASIC 1.0 ecu with j.c. chip ---red line at 5500

are the motronic 1.0 from the early i's (not the basic) interchangeable?
i need to get at least 6500 to 6800 rpm out of this engine for a minimal amount of cash.

btw, car also has h+r springs, eurathane bushings, welded and reinforced trailing arms, 3.73 rear end. its almost a sleeper
    '86 e30 eta
2.7 eta, "i" intake throttlebody and cam, drilled oil journals, conforti chip, 3.73, h&r springs, eurathane bushings, square tube reinforced trailing arms.

Even the early i has at least Motronic 1.1.

IIRC only the very early Euro i's used Motronic 1.0 and those had no Cats and No O2 sensor.

To get that kind of rpm you'd be better off going with a complete i head. The single valve springs of the ETA will cause your valves to float seriously at those RPM's.

the only thing holding me back is lack of rpm's, the motor is opened up for it.

Well then you need a new ECU/chip.

You need to upgrade to motronic 1.3 to get the higher rpm's out of it, or a stand alone setup like mega squirt.

I have an i ECU for sale, $50. I haven't pulled it yet so I don't know if it's 173, 380, etc. I have the wiring harness if you need it as well.

im trying to avoid having to replace the wiring harness, but if i have to i will, trying to figure out a plug n play swap with a higher rev, without buying custom made chip

What's wrong with getting a chip that raises the rev limit? What you're doing now is like trying to open a door without using the knob-- possible but pointlessly difficult. Correct me if I'm wrong here...

well, i have a jc chip (eta), in the basic 1.0- so i can rev to 5500-

and i have the stock chip that im trying to reprogram with the eprom writer- im running into a wall trying to find a bin file (program) that will work. just programimg it like an "i" doesnt work(im guessing starup differences and crank sensor location)

so if anyone knows how to "cut and paste" the bin files i could "in theory" leave the essentials alone, but change the fuel, ignition, timing, and cutoff into what the "i" has. this would be ideal, and if i get it to work, i might be the first to do this? maybe?:? hopefully not!

Their was a 6900 RPM chip made by someone (maybe Dinan?) but I think it is discontinued. It was designed specifically for the conversion you made.

cool, i figured someone had to do it, now to find the files to make my own:nice:

No plug and play. Swap the harness and intake, you will make lots more power, ask me how i know.

Aren't there oiling issues in the head that can't be dealt with unless you're using a head which has an "I" casting, unless its an '88E head?

not if you drill the oil passages for the other cam bearings.
