Doing headgasket soon, what other "while you're in there" things should I try to do?

    Question in the title.

Going to order a non-Victor reinz HG, and stock head bolts, already going to replace a couple hoses and the intake manifold and exhaust manifold gaskets as wells as the oil pan gasket (a bit unrelated though). any other things that I can freshen up while I'm in there?

      clean the block threads.
change the gasket on the little pipe on the back of the head for the coolant.

Get the head cleaned tested and re surfaced. Check the top of the valves for wear and or pitting, replace as necessary. Check and replace any eccentrics that have flat spots.
Lap the valves and put in new valve stem seals.
Obviously good time to do a cam and rockers as much easier than when back in the car.
Really up to you how far you want to go refurbishing the head.

Make sure C191 connector is 100% intact and not near failure on either side...

all vacuum hoses, plus that stupid little gasket for the coolant passage on the TB.

New throttle body gaskets, new injector and FPR orings, and as said above, make sure C191 is spotless

I tend to go a bit overboard, figuring that one tear down and repair is better than several. I'd have the head surfaced & inspected, valves ground, new seals, and any worn parts replaced. I'd also do the main, intermediate, and cam seals, all other gaskets, new head bolts, new copper plated exhaust nuts, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat all cooling system hoses, have the injectors rebuilt (I like RC Engineering), and chase the head bolt threads & clean with solvent and compressed air. If the thermostat housing shows the usual corrosion I'd replace it also. Likewise for the heater hose fitting on the back of the head.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

it's been burning/leaking a bit oil recently (I'll have to top it up with a quart between oil changes every 3-4k miles). I'm hoping the oil pan gasket will help with that, but what should I look for besides that to see what the source of the leak is?

And yeah planning on replacing some of those hoses and other gaskets mentioned, and I think the head is mostly in good shape.

will it require a complete head teardown?

Yeah, pulling the valves will require taking pretty much everything off, but valve guide seals are easy enough to do once the head is in your hands, and you really do want to inspect cam bearings and valve guides, especially if you are over 100k
