Weird fuel injector question-cleaning fixed hard start temporarily?

So since I bought my 1990 325i vert I have the standard issue everyone seems to have, really long crank times when the car sits for a while. I have to crank it for 7 - 9 seconds and it stumbles on start but idles and runs great. If I turn the car off and turn the key right back on, it starts instantly. If it sits all night it starts instantly, if I leave it for a few hours it has a hard start. Mechanically I am solid but troubleshooting not so great but I am pretty sure I narrowed it down to the fuel injectors based on fuel pressure dropping at the rail after I shut it down.

I pulled the injectors, cleaned them per the pelican article and installed new o-rings. The car started instantly and perfectly for 3 days. Then, it went right back to where it was previously. Exactly the same long starts etc. I thought it was the o-rings but now I think I have some injectors leaking gas after I shut it off. But if that is the case, why would a good cleaning fix the problem for three days? In that span of time I changed nothing on the car. I come from carbs so this is the first fuel injected car I have worked on extensively.

Also, on a rebuilt or remanufactured fuel injector is that completely rebuilt or only the standard kit that you can buy; pintle caps, fule filters and a good cleaning and testing? I have found new not remanufactured injectors for around $35. That seems almost too good to be true but about the same price as remanufactered ones?

Anyway, my plan is to replace the injectors. It seems pretty solid that the issue is a leaky one or two but I thought I would throw it at to the group as to why a cleaning would mitigate the problem for a few days. Also, I put a new fule filter in prior to pulling the injectors.

It could be that the fuel pump c/v is leaking, an draining back into the tank.

Thanks, I was thinking that too, but if that was the issue I would think cleaning the injectors wouldn't clear the issue up for a few days? Seems like it wouldn't have had any effect?

a new set of injectors was all that cured my problem with identical symptoms. have no idea what the actual issue was something to do with fuel vapour is my guess......try out or borrow a different set known to be good so you dont waste money if it doesn't fix the issue

ill guess and say that of it starts perfect overnight then its not drainback issue as the longer the worse it would be.....

The fuel pump primes briefly when you turn on the ignition. After it has sat for awhile, instead of cranking immediately, cycle the key on (but not start) for 5 seconds, then repeat 2 more times. After that, see if it starts quickly. That will help determine the cause of problem.

Have this guy clean your injectors:

I had him do mine. He is cheap, quick and does a great job. Even sent me before and after pictures.

Thanks for the tip on injectors. I think I have fixed the issue though, I will see in the morning but it looks like a bad FPR. I made a toggle switch jumper and the fuel pump seems to be rocking and rolling so the only thing left fuel wise was the fuel pressure regulator. I pulled off the vacuum line and started it, per an old thread and before I could even play around with the vacuum line gas shot out of the regulator. I had pulled the vacuum hose before and couldn't tell that there was any gas in it, but I watched the FPR spray gas out the vacuum side and shut the car off. $55 bucks later I popped a new FPR on and it SEEMS to be back to flawless starts.

Strictly a guess here but either the injectors were fine to begin and the cleaning helped the FPR for a few days or when I cleaned and replaced all the o-rings on the injectors the better pressure caused the FPR to fail within a few days? Maybe it was just it's time?

Regardless, if it cranks over tomorrow like it did tonight post fix, I am back in business!

fuel pressure regulator is not supposed to leak gas.

Oh I know, I just don't know if the FPR was already bad or failed later since everything was perfect for three days after I cleaned the injectors. Drove it around today and it's starting like a freaking champ now!
