I've either just dropped the subframe a bit or jacked the engine up. The former is similar to what you're suggesting but with the trouble of unhooking the entire system. If you haven't already bought one, go grab an engine brace bar. Makes a lot of things much easier and safer.
    Swanny!
    SUCKERS.

It doesn't help. There's still a crossmember there.

use an engine hoist to lift the engine 3-4 inches. makes the job easy.

I've always left mine in so not to have to get my steering aligned again.

I was planning on doing this soon also and was wondering the same thing. Bentley (chapter 4, pg 62) says to remove the 2 bolts connecting the rack to the subframe, but never says to remove the rack. Can this really be done or is Bentley missing a line somewhere saying to remove the rack or jack the engine up?

On some forum somewhere, I read you can jack the engine up from the A/C bracket to do this, is that right?

This is like cutting a steak with a chainsaw. my god! you are doing 100x more work.

get a bottle jack and a small block of wood. release the passenger side engine mount and then jack up the engine on the motor mount arm.

you guys are making this easy job really hard.

"Cutting a steak with a chainsaw" - fantastic!

Yeah I like the idea of using the motor mount arm, I'm sold on that one.
