    HELP E30 won't stay running

So just today I was driving my e30 rather hard and then I started to realize my exhaust got a lot louder. It got louder and sounds more like an older muscle car now, now when I start her I have to press on the throttle a little bit to keep her started and I have to keep her moving in gear or keep her revving at at least 1200 to keep her from shutting off on me. When I slow down and down shift the exhaust makes little popping sounds. Also recently here and there I have been smelling gas a little bit, but everything else about the car seems to be running normally. I have absolutely no clue what could be the problem, these parts of the car are not my expertise. Any help would be much appreciated.
