    Engine vibrations

    Hello,

    I recently bought an E30 Touring 325i -89.

It has a lot of problems as I doubt it's been used for the past 5 years. =p

but the one I can't figure out is this weird engine vibrations.

    -

On low RPM it can build up to a rocking movement that is felt from the drivers seat.

In addition, if you're underneath it it kinda looks like the transmission is shifted to the drivers side slightly. The left mount looks straight and the right looks dragged to the left.

And if you're inside trying to put in the reverse gear then you bump slightly into the centerconsole when doing so.

I haven't been able to get a look at the engine mounts yet.

And finally if you look at the generator belt there is a little side to side movement from the "big" pulley.

Any idea which parts to change first? (=

Could the engine mounts really be worn out after 25 years and 230.000km?

I have similar symptoms, I just picked up a 90 325is with a new head and 215k miles on the clock. The engine idles great but there is a very lumpy vibration felt in the driver seat in idle. Any insights would be appreciated

I've got the rusted front fenders out and I can't see any sign of crash repair in the frame. It all looks straight and original.

It does have a new beam, the one by the front swaybar, I wonder why. =/

Is it common to have to replace the engine mounts?

definitely. Take a look at the two tranny and engine mounts. most likely they have started to flatten out and the rubber is cracking. One was so bad on an 88 325is i parted that the mount had actually split in two.

you probably should replace those mount if you can hear large sound made by long shaft coupling while changing gear and while in sudden rev coz the engine and conn3ction to rear axle not align properly where it should.. low rpm tuning can cause the engine vibration too.. try adjusting the idle rpm to normal 750-800 rpm will help to reduce the vibration
