    88 325i timing is off?

I picked up a 88 325i vert a few weeks ago. 3 owner car, the previous owner has had it over 10 years. It was pretty rough, but the price was right so I drove it home. I replaced the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, and spark plugs (had a decently new set of bavauto plug wires) All of that helped immensely, it had a pretty bad idle surge, jumping from 700-1500 and it now idles right around 900rpms.

That being done, the car still feels very sluggish. My 86 325es feels much quicker.

The previous owner replaced the water pump, thermostat, and radiator 3k miles ago and when I asked if he replaced the timing belt he said no, but he replaced the belt for the water pump which has me thinking that he may have skipped a tooth on the timing belt. Knowing this I haven't rev'd the car past 5k rpms ad it feels like it doesnt want to rev higher anyhow. I checked the compression just to be save and they were all within 7psi of 180.

Would a bad afm be a possibility? or should I pull the timing belt and make sure its good? I would have already but I havent had the free time to yet but may get to this weekend.

A M20B25 doesn't really start making power until 4k rpms so something is clearly holding it back. Cam timing, exhaust or intake restriction, AFR way off are all possible.

A lot of people watch misleading vids on you tube and try to tune their afm but forget where they started or the springs takes the wheel to no man's land lol.

You have a "rough" car with a timing belt of unknown age. If it were me (and it has been) I wouldnt start it until I replaced the timing belt

I know that he put a new belt on, I am just curious if the timing is off from skipping a tooth or something
