As an M20 owner I've honestly looked at the M42 and figured I would rather have that if there was no effort involved. A small smiley 4 cylinder revving all the time makes a lot of sense in an E30, they sound great, sound great built NA and still have a distinct note when you turbo them like a Subaru. In any case an M20 takes a lot more work to be happy once you get up to about 7k revs and I think the M42 will be worth keeping in the car. I think my M20 is awesome but for different reasons and it's a dinosaur that makes the M42 look like it came out yesterday.

All that said may be just because I own an eta.

I much prefer the mid-range of the m20 to the peaky nature of the m42. And I find the m20 way easier to work on. To each his own, there are pros and cons to both.

        Also....K20 hehe.

Haha. If I had unlimited funds a k20/s2000 trans would be my go to. Had 6 Hondas before the e30 so I do love high revving 4's. I'm actually just going to pick up the whole car. Went to see it today. The body is perfect other than some small rust on the quarter. It's a 325e so there is no way I'm going to swap the motor over. I could build a stroker but most likely I will steal parts from it and sell it to fund an m42 build.
