I have an 89 325i, ran well until it just quit completely out of the blue and failed to start. I slapped the gas tank, and got it started to get it home. Must be the fuel pump on it's way out, I thought. Bought the nice TRE 255lph pump to replace the original pump and waited 2 days for its arrival.
Replaced the pump with the new TRE, and the car wouldn't start. I decided to check my pump job so I put a 12V battery directly onto the pump leads. Pump ran great. I then proceeded to follow the Bentley manual for testing the fuel relay. Jumping pins 30 and 87 of the fuel pump relay gives me battery voltage at the connector for the pump (ensuring good wiring to the pump), BUT THE PUMP DOES NOT RUN. Double checked the connectors and cleaned them but no amount of wiggling or pushing ever made the pump come on.
How is this possible? Pump runs off a battery directly but not when hooked up to the connector which has confirmed battery voltage (12.6V). Thanks for your help!
