    Removed AC- now what am I going to do with this new aux fan

    Title explains a lot. Replaced my aux fan last year and I really don't want to remove it. I found out on some hot days stuck in traffic, it really does help keep the engine temp steady.

    Now I've read that you can use brackets from the euro e30 m3 (came without AC and belt driven fan) to mount the fan- but what I've read back in 2005-ish the brackets were cheap. Now trying to find them they are around $15 a pop- not worth it.

    If I do make my own bracketry- should I mount this fan (flush) directly in front of the radiator? Or should I mount it more toward the front and keep a gap between the aux fan and the radiator. I'm unsure what the best bet is for cooling.


    Any insight would be great. Thanks!

    Would be the same probably. If you can mount it on the front of the radiator it might be more effective. Push fans arent really all that effective, pull fans work better most of the time. Is this an oem replacement or something like a spal?

      It's an OEM replacement. I'll be keeping the belt driven puller fan but would like to keep this pusher fan too.

      I read up some more and found out I should mount it as close to the radiator as possible for maximum cooling.

      If it doesn't work out as planned- its no big deal to remove the front grill and adjust if necessary. Just wondering if anyone else has done anything similar.

        Here's my homemade bracket using the factory aux fan and mounting. ;) It cools off my motor even when sitting in standstill traffic when it's 95F+. edit: oh yeah, I have no mechanical fan

            That's exactly what we did with both our track cars, with no clutch fan, and they stay perfectly cool.

                Slightly aside...how did you safely remove your AC? I was gonna see if I can call a tech to come to my garage and disconnect/drain the system...

                  You need to take it into a garage that can safely vacuum out the R12 from the system. My A/C was already drained out (leaked) before removing so I had nothing to worry about. I did verify with a gauge to make sure there was nothing left in the system. Removing the A/C components is easy- I have not tackled the evap unit under the dash yet and have the in/out lines from the under the hood to under the dash blocked and sealed off until I have time to remove it.

                  BTW- i'd' advise if removing your A/C, to keep the A/C bracket. If you ever wanted to jack up the engine (and can't jack from the oil pan, i.e. oil pan replacement)- its a great spot to jack from and fits nicely on a jack plate.
