    Oil Pan Baffles

    Are they worth it?

I was thinking of getting the IE one and gettin it in my car.

Since I'm putting this stroker together, and I'll be tracking my car, when money allows, at least 3 times a year - I figured it wouldn't hurt.

If I used one, would it work with an S50 crank, or is it only designed to work with normal M20 cranks? (yea...probably a question for IE)

But would this be worth it?

are you talking about a baffle, or a crank scraper?

if a crank scraper, no, they would have to be made for the longer stroke/counter weights of the S50 crank. you can have them made though, there's a site that sells crank scrapers for around $69 and he will do custom stroker designs.

as far as the worth, I'm not sure. it's not a huge expense (I just ordered mine last week, $85 shipped) and the scraper is designed to keep oil from traveling up the passenger side of the block under hard left cornering - a definite plus if you are tracking your car a lot.

I'm not sure if a baffle alone is worth it though, the scraper is also supposed to reduce drag on the crank by removing the oil that gets on the counter weights, in addition to oil control. a baffle alone will only keep the oil from sloshing around.

The main reason I wanted it was to eliminate the possiblity of what you mentioned - having oil climb the wall of the block.

Yea, I think IE's is a scraper and a baffle - who is it that does custom ones?

There is a guy who sells custom crank scrapers.
But I do not think he has developed one for the s50 crank, with the m20 block. The one he sells is for the eta/524td crank:81mm in the m20.

You would just need to ask him.
I was concered about how near the crank scaper gets to the crank,
cause it could cause a real problem, but the maker assured me
        they dont move.

Its called IB crank scapers, or something I forgot. :loco:

I tried googling it, with no luck.

          Any idea?

they already have them for the 81mm crank, but larger ones (like the S50) will likely require a custom template.

I got IE's crank scraper, and I've been grinding down a lot of material cause I am insanely nervous about how close it sets. Can anyone reassure me here that it will be fine?

I got a big more grinding to do, because one of the tabs BETWEEN the crank elbows only has about 1mm total of play, and I just don't feel comfortable with it like that.

What happens if I ever need to change my oil pan? I'll never be able to get this scraper straight - it'll end up having a bit of play before I get it bolted in, then move, and hit the crank.

                    Suggestions...ideas?

1mm is listed as the min. clearance for my crank scraper. does IE's come with any instructions?

                        Nah, no instructions.

I totally forgot about the gasket going below the crank scraper - so I don't think my scraper will do a whole lot of scraping anymore. But, I really don't mind - cause I wanted it to prevent oil from climbing the sidewalls mostly.

I've gotten it pretty well spaced now, without the gasket. I'll find out tomorrow how much it raises the crank scraper up with a gasket.

it doesn't say anything about using a gasket with my crank scraper.. the instructions say to use sillicone instead.

I talked to IE and he said they usually put a second oil pan gasket in there. Since I have two, I might as well.
