If it is any consolation, mine has a class 2 leak after head gasket replacement, too. It is on the front corner on the header side and I did have the head decked, cleaned the block thoroughly, and torqued the bolts correctly. Contrary to conventional wisdom, I used the VR head gasket, which I knew could be my undoing, but the repair budget was getting exhausted and I had to get the engine back together.

If I get the car's cosmetic issues fixed, I will look into a twin cam swap anyways. I really like the M20, but I don't know if I will ever make this one completely satisfactory.

I did find that re-torquing the valve cover nuts helped reduce the leakage some. It may not be the head gasket that is causing the drips, it could be the cam seal (which I replaced) or those rubber rocker shaft plugs (which I also replaced).

Head needs to be re-surfaced before putting a new HG on.
I have not found this to be universally true with M20s. If there is no measurable
surface distortion on the sealing surface head, it seals up pretty reliably. If it's good and clean.
