What is this sensor?

What does this do? 1989 325i. A lot of the insulation is cracked, could this be part of the reason my car won't start?

looked all over the bentely and couldn't find anything

Oil pressure switch. Only thing it does is turn a light on in the dash if pressure falls below 7psi.

Thanks ForcedFirebird! If there was no signal should the car still start if everything else is good? Or would no signal mean "there may not be enough pressure, don't try and start"?
