    Fuel Pump!! Need Help

Hey guys, fuel pump pooped out on the 89 325is. It has a Bosch pump 0580453019 with a VDO sending unit. I want to get the pump itself, not the entire assembly, and I want to also replace the sending unit, relay, filter, and o ring.

My question is, is OEM Bosch necessary for the pump or are other aftermarket brands just as effective? I found a pretty good price for the VDO sender and relay on Turner Motorsport, and a decently priced Bosch filter, o ring, and Meyle pump on FCP but I've never heard of that brand. I've searched and search but can only seem to find DIYs, not part recommendations. Looking to get the best deal for the best performance. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Meyle has become hit- and- miss- they used to sell good parts, but in the last
few years the outsourcing has set in. That said, the 'made in Turkey' control
arms haven't failed yet, despite some rather unkind treatment on my part.

Any pump that can make 45+ psi (and it doesn't need to be much more than that) at
    decent flow will work.
Since I need to stock a spare, too, I went looking at the usual suspects-
RockAuto shows a few options, but some of them are for early cars.

Blunt only shows the Bosch pump- but you might try calling...

I have, on occasion, used non-OE pump assemblies. My experience with them has been less than satisfactory. I have also tried replacing just the pump with an aftermarket part with less than satisfactory results. So now I only use a BMW OE pump assembly and, if needed be BMW OE level sensor. The original parts lasted 30+ years and I'd expect the new BMW parts to have a similar life.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

TRE make a pump at a reasonable price: http://treperformance.com/FuelPumps/...Pumps.html#340

You want the 340, I have one in my E30iX and my 540i. They work fine but you will need to solder the new wires and pump plug on to the old connections - fiddly but not difficult.

The TRE340 in my 540i has been in for a year, I rock 200 miles a day to work and back and haven't experienced any problems.

You can clean out the sender unit with carb cleaner. Just spray the cleaner into the sender tube and shake hard until there is no more brown or black particles in the fluid.

Thanks for the response guys. I was hoping to hear that there was a pump out there already made for the E30 that was as effective and less expensive than OEM. Also dnguyen will that guarantee that the sender lasts another 25 years? I don't want to have to pull it out in another 2 years to replace it.

Personally, I can see wanting a reliable pump,

but if the sender gets flakey again,
it's not so big a deal to pull the rear seat out...

...and it's not going to strand you in Peoria, either.

But then, in my old age, I have become a slave to the trip odometer,
so I never really trust the fuel gauge empirically any more.
Eli reset mine the other day, and I finally gave up and added the 5 gallons to fill it
so that it would be 'right' again...

Found OEM Bosch pump on eBay for $120 shipped, grabbed an OEM o ring and filter, installed in two hours including new fuel hose near the filter, and BOOM!! Good to go. Purring like a kitten. Fuel level sender seems to be working for the moment, but I'll replace down the road if necessary.

Thanks for the input folks! As always.
