Shims are usually to make the starter align properly. I don't think m20's use them. I'm not 100% on this though. My m20 doesn't use any shims, and I haven't seen one that does.

got the other starter in the mail today. Then i figured out i need a pre facelift starter and this one is a facelift version. My car is a one of the first facelifts cars (12/87) and uses some components of the pre facelift..

it looks exactly the same but the bendix is slightly larger and when i installed it it would spin against the flywheel and not engage it..

atleast i know now that the starter is the problem..

can you switch the bendixes on these starters? or i'm i going to look for another pre facelift starter

Or can i just switch the solenoids on top of starter?

            OLd starter: 1005 821 086 (1/01)

            New one : 1005 821 086 (1/02)

Give it a try, it may work.
