White smoke in engine bay - Transmission?

    White smoke in engine bay - Transmission?

    I replaced and checked all the hoses/connections/etc on my head swapped m20 to see if there was a coolant leak causing the smoking in my engine bay and it's still happening. I drove it real quick bit around the block to get the smoke going and now I'm wondering two things.

    Is it possible to get something in/on an exhaust that would cause persistent smoke?

    Is it possible to have ATF low enough that a transmission would smoke?

    I've got to get to the bottom of this, I can't stand not driving this car!

      is it coming from the exhaust side?

      I'd guess rocker cover gasket leaking oil onto the exhaust.

          Very possible. I have seen it happen. Previous post is probably correct. My girlfriends e46 did the same issue. Smoked a lot, it was somewhat intermittent (The only reason it was intermittent was the oil level).

          Check your exhaust manifold, if the heat shield (Flat plate) is spotty. You will need a new valve cover gasket!

              My guess is that the valve cover G is leaking on the heat shields.

                  Man I hope you guys are right! I have an extra gasket lying around so I should be able to check it pretty soon!

                      I was reading some forums and came across one that described similar symptoms to what I'm having, could white smoke be cause simply by a poorly bled coolant system or air bubbles in the coolant?

                          it is likely a coolant leak. oil smokes BLUE/dark not white. Only coolant or water based fluids are gonna smoke a whiteish color. Did you check the coolant connection on the back of the cylinder head?
